HP Offers China HP Jornada 428 Palm-size PC Companion

New Chinese HP Palm-size PC Companion is First to Have Color Screen


Windows CE On-Line -- Hewlett-Packard Company today announced its first palm-size PC companion for China, the HP Jornada. 428 palm-size PC, expected to. be available to China in January 1999.

This new addition to the HP Jornada family is based on the Microsoft Windows CE 2.11 operating system and is the first palm-size PC companion with a color screen.

The HP Jornada 428 palm-size PC is a full Chinese product, with familiar Windows applications such as Pocket Outlook, Inbox, Calculator, Pocket Internet Explorer, as well as HP's exclusive quick setting application. This compact companion also is the first HP product to use handwriting-recognition software, and it supports the standard Mainland China GB2312-80 character set. In addition, users have three choices for keyboard input: Pinyin, symbols and alphanumeric.

Mobile professionals now have instant access to business information in the palms of their hands, in rich, vibrant color. Busy professionals now can write client and meeting notes, to-do lists and addresses directly on the color screen, thanks to its handwriting-recognition capability, and then secure their important information with the HP Jornada 428 palm-size PC's password protection. In addition, the Windows CE dictionary application allows Chinese to English and English to Chinese translation.

The HP Jornada 428 palm-size PC offers four quick-launch icons, pen and touch interface, AC adapter, and speaker and microphone with earphone jack for accessing information without disturbing others. Synchronization is easy with Chinese Microsoft Desktop Services 2.2 to support synchronization with desktop PCs. Once connected, the HP Jornada 428 palm-size PC automatically synchronizes e-mail, documents and personal information with a desktop PC. With the simple addition of a modem, Pocket Internet Explorer enables users to surf the Web, and the Note Taker application allows for easy faxing.

Third-party add-ons provide expansion and connectivity option. The HP Jornada 428 palm-size PC's Compact Flash slot can be used for memory expansion and, with the standard memory Compact Flash cards, for data storage, for using other applications and more. The IR window allows users to exchange files, and, with a third-party printing program installed, the IR connection can be used to print to any IR-enabled printer.

 

HP Handheld Market

HP holds a leadership role in the Windows CE marketplace, having had 43 percent of the worldwide market share in the palmtop-PC category in 1997, according to Dataquest.

China Availability, Pricing and Support

The HP Jornada 428 palm-size PC is expected to be available in China starting in January 1999 through corporate resellers and retail locations. The HP Jornada 428 palm-size PC is backed by a one-year limited warranty.
